Roger 'Bass In You Waist' Williams was introduced to music at a very early age via his father's vast record collection. Roger was born on the island of Jamaica but has spent much of his life in Canada. Music was played loud throughout the family home daily for many hours, ranging from Jazz classics to vintage Calypsoes to Bossa Novas to Tchikovski. His formal music education began at the age of ten when piano lessons were offered to him at the local conservatory. At the time, he found it very difficult to balance his growing love of music with his passion for sports.
Moving to Toronto from Regina, Saskatchewan at the age of twelve Roger studied the cello at Don Valley Jr. High, played in the orchestra and enrolled in extra summer music school activities. His music involvement continued through to the end of High School at which time he began experimenting with electric bass. A few years later, his attention turned from studying sciences at the University of Toronto to committing himself to an in depth three year study programme in Jazz at Humber College.
Unable to sustain a living solely from music gigs in Toronto, Roger accepted an offer with Chandris Cruise Lines and toured extensively throughout the Caribbean and South America. This opportunity proved to be the beginning of a new way of life for him. Bitten by the travel bug, he traveled widely across the globe for the next seven years utilizing every opportunity to practice and improve on any weak points of playing. In the process he also became familiar with a wide variety of styles of music.
Roger returned to Toronto in 1997 and quickly became one of the most sought after bass players. Over the past seven years he has recorded and performed with locals such as Divine Earth Essence, Ivana Santilli, Juli Black, Alana Bridgewater, Wadeo Brown, Billy Newton Davis, Katie Burgess and Glenn Lewis. Currently he is working with The Arsenals, Aleah D'kos, and with Tony Rabalao (Joy Drop project). Roger has brought his extraordinary bass playing to AHANAIE wowing audiences at every performance with his explosive and versatile playing style. Excited about the rare opportunity that being part of the AHANAIE experience has provided for truly creative exploration his motto is:
Peace, Love & More Bass. . . . . . . Aw-ite!
