Consuelo was born in Havana, Cuba on September 3, 1961. A true Habanera, she is originally from Habana Vieja (Old Havana) but now lives in Centro Habana (Central Havana). She began her dance career at age fourteen in Casa de Cultura (House of Culture) where she studied dance for two years. She credits in particular Tomas Morales director and choreographer of the dance company 'Tercero Mundo' (Third World) as exercising a tremendous influence on her development as a folkloric and contemporary dancer. During the time Consuelo was a student at the Casa de Cultura she began to participate in dance competitions and various festivals between the different Casa de Cultura schools in Havana. She very quickly distinguished herself as a dancer who was destined for great things. Tomas Morales and 'Tercero Mundo' received top honours as the premier dance company in Havana on several occasions during the time Consuelo attended Casa de Cultura.
At sixteen Consuelo joined the folkloric dance group 'Liberasion 75' that operated under the guidance and direction of the renowned maestro 'Tato'. In the three years that she was with 'Liberasion 75' Consuelo matured into an excellent dancer gaining much experience from participating in many popular music and folkloric cabarets for tourists in Guanabo. During this time she also benefited from working with the renowned percussionist Orlando 'Puntilla' Rios. It is a time in her life that she looks back on with fond memories but it all came to an abrupt end in 1980 when the 'Liberasion 75' dance company broke up after the mass exodus of many of the dancers to the United States. Consuelo then became a student again in the 'Escuelita Tropicana' dance school under the direction of Andres Gutierre and for the next five years she performed in the grand cabarets 'La Cecilia' in the Miramar district. In 1985 Consuelo joined Grupo Raices Profundas as a professional dancer/singer. Today, some eighteen odd years later, she is now a lead dancer and soloist with the company.
Consuelo has appeared in several films and documentaries about dance in Cuba and has performed in the Grand Teatro de Habana with the Havana Opera. She has toured across Cuba and performed in Mexico, Nicaragua, Spain, the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe. Consuelo originally came to Canada to perform with Jane Bunnett in a North American tour. She has also performed in Toronto with Grupo Vibrason (salsa band extraordinaire). She has lent vocal support to several musical projects, including the Abilona multi CD compilation of Afro-Cuban folkloric music as well as to the innovative recording entitled P18 URBAN CUBAN produced in Havana and Paris that combines house, rap and Afro-Cuban folkloric musical arrangements (an image of Consuelo dancing graces the cover of the CD). She has taught Afro-Cuban folkloric dance in Toronto, during the summer, at Ballet Creole and other local dance companies from 1997 to 2003.
Having recently married a Canadian, Consuelo is looking forward to teaching more in the future and eventually hopes to develop a small dance company and school in Toronto. Consuelo has been warmly embraced into the AHANAIE family circle, her thrilling vocal contributions leaving audiences spell bound every time she performs. Among her greatest accomplishments, to date, she prioritizes her role as mother to Lemay and grandmother to Lemay Yamel.
