The Superior-Martel Forest Management Unit is located in northeastern Ontario. Communities within or adjacent to the management unit include the Town of Chapleau, and the unorganized community of Sultan. The total area of forest is approximately 1, 075, 824 hectares.
The Superior-Martel Forest consists of two Sustainable Forest Licenses which in the past have been managed separately. The Superior portion of the forest has been managed under its own forest management plans, while the Martel portion of the forest has most recently been managed with the neighbouring Pineland forest as past of the 2001-2021 Pineland-Martel Forest Management Plan. The amalgamation of the Superior Forest and the Martel Forest into the Superior-Martel Forest is expected to become effective April, 2006.
The Superior-Martel Forest is situated within the Boreal Forest Region. The main tree species that the forest supports are jack pine, white and black spruce, poplar and birch, with minor components of balsam fir, white pine, eastern white cedar and tolerant hardwoods.
The management unit is the primary source of conifer fiber for the wood processing facilities at Chapleau and Pineal Lake with additional hardwood fiber commitments to Grant Forest Products in Timmins, Weyerhaeuser Company Ltd. in Wawa, Columbia Forest Products in Nipigon, Longlac Wood Industries in Longlac, Birchland Veneer in Thessalon, and Tembec Industries Inc. in Mattawa.
The FMP is being prepared by Tembec Industries Inc., in co-operation with MNR Chapleau District and a Local Citizens' Committee (LCC).
The anticipated dates that
the FMP will be in effect are, in terms of strategic direction, for the
20-year period of April, 2006 to March 31, 2026; and, in terms of forest
operations, for the five-year term of April, 2006 to March 31, 2011.
